The College Hangout

Texas A&M University – Commerce

When we first arrived at Texas A&M University in Commerce, Texas for the discovery phase of this project we saw a blank canvas and were excited about the potential this space offered. Our client was looking to develop the perfect college hangout!

Building culture and community is imperative to establishing a successful learning environment and we were really happy with the outcome of this outdoor living space.

Phase One

We began by offering a rendering of the proposed plan for the space. We knew that we would have to level out the ground, think through drainage solutions and create an environment that was enjoyable for a large group of people.

Once the proposal was finalized and approved our team got to work!

Phase Two

There was a slight grade in the landscaping that we needed to address first. We were able to build up a level ground to create the canvas and added a tiered-retaining wall to ensure drainage would be effective.

The pergola added coverage and shade for the area and framed the space to face the gorgeous water feature at the entrance of the campus.

Phase Three

During phase three we began laying pavers, building fireplaces and prepping for our favorite feature, the life-sized chess board. We added in fans for the hot Texas summers and comfortable seating areas with furniture that can withstand high winds and harsh weather.

Phase Four

Phase Four is where you see things really come together aesthetically. Our favorite part of this phase was customizing the pavers in the center of the area to show off the school mascot between each chessboard. Check out the timelapse video on this unique feature here.

At this point, it was time to put the final touches in place. We curbed the landscaping and added in low-maintenance additions to the rock beds surrounding the area.

Final Result

Once the project was finished we had to sit back and soak it all up. The space truly turned out just like we pictured and almost immediately we were seeing college students take advantage of the area.
